Freelance Writer / Translator (Greek)

 Avaaz translators bring Avaaz to millions of people each week by localizing and rewriting Avaaz emails from English into key languages. Currently, about 1.000.000 people receive Avaaz campaigns in Greek. The role requires very strong written communication skills. We like to think of Avaaz translators as writers, not mere translators -- your job will be to make the Avaaz spirit come alive in Greek.

This is an exciting position at the heart of one of the most innovative and promising public organizations in the world today. It offers a unique opportunity to support large-scale social change efforts. This job will suit someone with a flexible schedule who is able to work on tight deadlines. It will require roughly 1 to 3 days per week, and report to an Avaaz Campaigner.


  • Taking English Avaaz campaigns and turn them into sharp and compelling campaigns in Greek -- translating/interpreting/editing all relevant materials for the Avaaz website and emails. This is estimated between 1000-2000 words a week.
  • Finding supporting sources for campaigns in your language.
  • Ensuring the Avaaz website reads excellently in your language, that there are no grammatical errors etc. 


  • Professionalism, efficiency and results-oriented delivery on short timelines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Greek.
  • Previous experience in journalism/ editing/writing/translating in Greek.
  • Able to pick up easily and use Avaaz’s writing style guidelines.
  • Passion and commitment to global justice, citizen empowerment and social change.
  • Strong teamwork skills, comfortable in a highly collaborative team culture and a hierarchical team structure.
  • Knowledge (or willingness to learn) basic HTML code.


Avaaz is a virtual organization, with most of our work done over email, telephone and Skype.


Rates vary with location and experience, but are competitive with leading non-governmental organisations.
