Legal Director

Anywhere. Americas and EU timezones preferred. Full-time Allows remote

The Avaaz Legal Director helps to direct the organization’s legal operations and support the core campaigning work of the organization. This position also works with the Executive Director and other Campaign Directors to form the senior team that engages with all strategic and organizational questions.

It offers a unique platform from which to develop and pursue large-scale social change efforts and is a fantastic opportunity for a lawyer who enjoys using both the law and policy, political and organizing tools to advance a social change mission.

As Legal Director you will work within the legal team to counsel the Executive Director and staff on how to use the law offensively to achieve social change, and you will advise the team on how to mitigate legal risks when aggressively campaigning for social change. You will be managing the organization’s legal risk including issues related to the group’s tax-exempt status, its human resources and relationships with vendors and other third parties, and its governance, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations around the world.

Responsibilities

  • Counseling Avaaz staff on how to achieve campaign goals, often using aggressive tactics, while mitigating legal risk.
  • Help direct defensive litigation or investigations when necessary.
  • Help direct Avaaz’s in-house legal operations, including human resources, tax and regulatory compliance, corporate governance, intellectual property, data privacy and internet law.
  • Stay abreast of developments in the law around the world on issues relevant to online campaigning organizations, including emailing laws, privacy laws, digital copyright laws and other relevant legal regimes.
  • Working with the Senior Team to steer organizational priorities, develop long-term campaigning strategies and manage organizational growth.
  • Public speaking and media.
  • Helping to shape the overall strategic direction of the organization, and at times taking responsibility for recruitment, team building and management, and special projects. 

Qualifications

  • J.D.
  • Strong ability to spot and analyze legal issues, think creatively about legal problems and develop solution-oriented legal guidance rapidly.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Passion and commitment to global justice, citizen empowerment and social change.
  • High professionalism, self-motivation, efficiency and results-oriented delivery on short timelines.
  • Strong teamwork skills, comfortable in a highly collaborative team culture and a hierarchical team structure.
  • Strong project and staff management skills.
  • High degree of knowledge and engagement across a range of global issues, combining the ability to engage in depth with questions of policy and political strategy with a readiness to move swiftly from issue to issue.
  • Strong strategic, creative, and innovative thinking.
  • Bar membership in good standing in your home jurisdiction.

While you do not need to be a member of the bar in the US state, you must be a member in your home jurisdiction be comfortable working with US law.

Fluency in English is a requirement. Fluency in other languages is desirable, especially French, German, Spanish and Portuguese.

Location

Avaaz is a virtual organization, with most of our work done over email, telephone and Skype. Our staff are based in cities all over the world and meet at team retreats twice per year. Avaaz covers office costs, either to establish a home office or to rent one, and we support staff to house themselves in local similar organisations when preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary varies with location and experience, but is highly competitive with leading nongovernmental organizations. Benefits also range with location, but include 5 weeks paid vacation per year.
